Alaska’s cold, clean waters produce some of the best seafood in the world, and eating it where it was caught is one of the great pleasures of a visit. From a simple grilled salmon fillet to a plate of king crab legs, the flavors here are fresh, clean, and deeply tied to the place.

Many Alaskan cruises stop in fishing towns where the day’s catch lands on the dock, which makes it easy to taste the difference. Here is a guide to the seafood worth seeking out, and how to enjoy it.

Salmon: Alaska’s Signature Fish

Salmon is at the heart of Alaska’s food culture. Five species of wild Pacific salmon swim in its waters, and each has its own character.

  • King (Chinook): The largest and richest, with a buttery texture.
  • Sockeye (red): Deep red flesh with a bold, full flavor.
  • Coho (silver): Milder and a little lighter, popular for grilling.
  • Pink: Delicate and mild, often used in canned and smoked products.
  • Chum (keta): Lean and firm, often smoked or used for roe.

Salmon is served many ways in Alaska: grilled over alder wood, smoked, baked on a cedar plank, or in chowders and burgers. Smoked salmon makes an easy, portable souvenir.

King Crab: A Special Treat

Alaskan king crab is famous for its large, sweet legs. The meat is tender and slightly sweet, and it needs little more than melted butter and a squeeze of lemon. Because it is a premium product, it is often saved for a special meal.

Dungeness crab and snow crab are also found in Alaska. Dungeness has a delicate sweetness, while snow crab is often served in clusters of legs.

Halibut: Flaky and Mild

Halibut is a large flatfish with firm, white, mild flesh. It is often served battered and fried as fish and chips, grilled, or baked with herbs and lemon. Many visitors say a halibut basket at a dockside shack is one of their most memorable meals.

Other Seafood to Try

  • Spot prawns: Sweet and tender, often served simply grilled.
  • Rockfish: A mild white fish good for tacos and chowders.
  • Scallops and clams: Fresh and briny, often served in chowder.
  • Salmon roe: Bright orange and savory, sometimes served on toast or crackers.

Where to Eat

You do not need a fancy restaurant to eat well in Alaska.

  1. Dockside shacks: Casual spots with fried fish baskets and chowder.
  2. Local seafood restaurants: Often serve the catch of the day with seasonal sides.
  3. Smokehouses: Great for tasting smoked salmon and buying gifts.
  4. Farmers’ markets and fish markets: A good way to see what is in season.
  5. Excursions: Some tours include a salmon bake, a cooking demonstration, or a fishing trip.

Tips for Eating Seafood in Port

  • Ask what is fresh. Menus often change with the catch.
  • Try a sampler. Small portions let you compare varieties.
  • Look for wild-caught. Alaska has strong fishery standards, and wild salmon is a point of pride.
  • Pair simply. A squeeze of lemon, melted butter, and a side of vegetables often show off the fish best.
  • Mind your time. Leave enough time to enjoy your meal and return to the ship.

Bringing Home a Taste of Alaska

Smoked salmon, canned salmon, and jarred preserves are popular souvenirs. Many shops will pack and ship items, which is handy if you do not want to carry them. Check storage guidance and customs rules for traveling with seafood.

A Flavor of the Place

Eating seafood in Alaska connects you to the landscape, the water, and the people who work on it. A simple plate of fresh salmon tastes better when you can see the water it came from.
